Dear pet owners,
Thank you for scheduling an ultrasound with us! Our goal is maximize the diagnostic capability
of the ultrasound while keeping your pet comfortable.
Withhold food for 12-18 hrs prior to the procedure (water is ok). Please do not feed your pet
after (8PM) on the night prior to the procedure unless your veterinarian instructs you otherwise.
Food filled stomach and intestines cause gas shadowing which could prevent us from seeing
everything in the abdomen. Additionally, when the stomach is distended, your pet will
experience discomfort when we maneuver the ultrasound probe around their abdomen.
Morning drop off on the day of the procedure. We travel to your veterinarian’s practice for your
convenience. We typically exceed 200 miles of travel every day and service several veterinary
hospitals each day. There are many variables that will dictate the time of our arrival. Some of
these include: the number of procedures on a given day and the distance between each stop, the
duration of each procedure (including extra procedures that may be indicated such as biopsies),
last minute emergency procedures, and worst of all traffic. Please understand that our schedule
must allow for these variables and we will not be able to coordinate to meet you at your
veterinarian’s practice at a specific time for the procedure. We require that patients be dropped
off in the morning, at the time specified by your veterinarian on the day of the procedure.
Sedation is sometimes necessary to relax your pet. When patients are
anxious or nervous, they tend to tense their abdominal muscles which can limit our ability to see
everything in the abdomen. Anxious dogs often pant excessively. Motion from a panting dog
makes ultrasound images blurry and can prevent us from seeing everything in the abdomen.
Reducing your pets anxiety will improve their experience and help us get the most out of the
procedure. Please give your veterinarian permission to use sedation at their discretion when you
drop of your pet.
Shaving the hair will be usually necessary. In order to obtain clear images, the ultrasound probe must
make direct contact with the skin.
